If there ever was a time to say “Cheese, please,” it’s at Artisanal. With 250 cheeses from around the world, over 150 wines by the glass and famed Terrance Brennan from Picholine behind the menu, it’s just about impossible to go wrong.
Entering into the restaurant, one is assaulted with the musky aroma of cheeses from the fromagerie station and the variety of fondues on the tables. The large brasserie can get somewhat loud from the busy tables and the high ceilings, but service is always on point. Servers are knowledgeable in wine and cheese as well as the French menu. Feel free to walk over to the fromagerie, where you may sample any of the huge variety of cheeses.
Food is prepared with care: even the frisee salad is delicious with blue cheese, bacon lardons and poached egg. Start with a basket of the famed gougers, lightly baked gruyere puffs. For appetizers, the tuna carpaccio with shaved fennel is so paper thin that it melts on your tongue. A fondue or cheese plate (pick 3-5 cheeses for 2 people) is not to be missed. Follow up with one of the fish dishes like sautéed skate wing with blood orange grenobloise and cauliflower or the hanger steak frites (you can choose to have it made with filet mignon).
Save room for the Artisanal cheesecake, with pecan pralines and caramel sauce, or the apple tarte tatin which comes with a chedder cheese crust. Either one will top off your sweet tooth to ensure you leave satisfied.
