It can sometimes be hard to find good sushi with a good ambiance. Often you want to find fresh and tasty fish but are in the mood for a little more of a sexy vibe than the sleek light wood of many sushi dens. That’s where Amber comes in. Located on 3rd Avenue between 27th and 28th streets, this bi-level Japanese restaurant offers both delicious food and a dark and hip vibe.
Start out with the crunchy tuna tartar with mango sake wasabi soy for $9.50, or the Crunchy, Crunchy, Crunchy -crispy wasabi seaweed topped with crunchy spicy tuna and crunchy spicy salmon for $9. If you would like to try a hot appetizer, taste the Grilled Eggplant with sweet hoisin sauce for $6 or the Grilled Chilean Seabass Skewers (2 skewers per order) for $8.50.
Traditional rolls are well prepared with nice cuts of fish. Prices are slightly higher than in some neighboring restaurants but the quality can be tasted. Most special sushi rolls are $15, like the Double Crunchy -spicy tempura portobello and asparagus inside, topped with crunchy spicy salmon, or the Dragon's Bride - spicy shrimp tempura & cucumber roll topped with black and red caviar The Sushi For Two for $48 includes 12 pieces of sushi, a spicy tuna roll, a california roll, an eel cucumber roll and a salmon avocado roll, and as you can see, the total size is quite generous. Be sure to also consider some of the dishes from the Wok and Grill like the Sizzling Salmon Steak ($17) with sweet peas, asparagus, yellow squash, and a mushroom bedding, or the Sangria Crispy Duck ($16), prepared with red wine sauce with cucumber, pineapple, bok choy, and mango lily root.
